Ebella We use 100% organic alpaca fleece. Alpacas are some of the most eco-conscious animals on the planet. They are perfectly suited to their High Andean environment, having evolved there tens of thousands of years ago. Unlike sheep or cattle or goats, they don’t herd, preferring to roam in pairs or small groups of no more than three or four.
Combined with their soft padded hooves and preference for native plants, that makes alpacas one of the cutest sustainable resources since Smokey the Bear.
ebella 1 At e bella, we make every possible effort to minimize the environmental impact of each one of our products. Though it is still necessary to import our products from Peru via air freight, we are a socially and environmentally conscious business and are proud to bring an earth friendly solution to home textile design that minimizes landfill waste and supports overall sustainability.
Natural, renewable resource: alpacas are low-impact animals that are in perfect tune with their High Andean environment, and annually provide several yields of a durable, multi-purpose product.
Biodegradable: our alpaca yarn is 100% biodegradable, as is the pima cotton used for the warp in our flatweaves.
Reduce: by purchasing an bella rug or pillow you are purchasing a quality product that will last much longer than a machine-made equivalent; plus, we make almost all our products to order, so there is little or no inventory waste.
Low-carbon footprint: bella is a cottage industry that, save for shipping, could have existed and thrived in a pre-industrial, pre-combustion engine economy. Our artisans work at home or in small, local co-operatives, and all of our rugs and pillows are handmade on human-powered looms that are made from locally available wood with tools that are often manufactured and retooled on site.
100% organic: With alpacas wide range of natural color (22 variations from pure white to cream, from light brown to slate grey to deep black) we are proud to offer our clients the choice of having their product made without any chemical or natural dyes.
Responsible: Clearly our aesthetic is one of color. However, to get vibrant and long-lasting colors, it is necessary to use some form of chemical or metal mordant. Because of this, we source all our colored yarn from local factories in Peru where the dyeing process is subject to strict environmental regulations and the waste is disposed of appropriately instead of in local river systems.
Global community: Our products aim to create bridges between cultures rather than gaps, and at the same time celebrate cultural diversity. Through art, design and craftsmanship we hope to extend the community of people who respect each other and respect the planet.
Ebella2 Our weavers work either in their own homes or in small local co-operatives.
By avoiding the need for industrial scale factories, this not only significantly reduces the environmental footprint of each of our rugs, but ensures that the weavers remain close to their families and communities.
In a society that places a premium on community and family support, this business structure is a boon for the artisans.
We also guarantee that no children work in the production of our rugs.
