Forest Stewardship Council: Wood & Paper Industry Even though technologies for refining post consumer pulp have improved, virgin fiber still represents a significant requirement in paper production. According to the FSC, only 35% of current consumption is met by using recycled fiber; in addition, approximately 25% of recovered fiber is exported out of US markets.

Why Sustainable Forestry? Sustainable forestry provides a way of using trees and non-timber forest products to meet peoples' ever-increasing demand for wood and paper products, without degrading forest ecosystems. Manufacturers who support sustainable forestry practices increase protection of soils, waterways and wildlife, and they treat workers and neighboring communities fairly.

Pirwi
Did you know? PIRWI staff work in Mexico City and most of their suppliers are also based in the city, although many raw materials come from other countries. They use a furniture finish made in Germany, because they have found it to be best in environmental terms. They source American, Canadian and German wood because Mexican certified wood does not meet their standards.
They have recently started to manufacture their
own plywood using certified veneer as well as 100% cotton ropes. Since there are currently no 100% organic cotton
ropes commercially available, Pirwi manufactures their own.
