Breast Cancer FundFounded in 1992 with offices in San Francisco, Calif. and Seattle, Wash., BCF is the leading national non-profit focused on improving womens health by identifying and eliminating environmental links to breast cancer. Through public education, policy initiatives and other innovative campaigns, BCF mobilizes the public to secure the changes needed to stop this epidemic. By focusing solely on breast cancer prevention, BCF has established itself as a leader within the growing environmental health movement and has played an important leadership role in securing a number of significant victories, both on state and national levels.Recent legislative successes in California include passage of the California Environmental Contaminant Biomonitoring Program, a new health program that measures toxic hot-spots for a better understanding of the relationship between chemical exposures and increasing rates of breast cancer; the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2005, which mandates the disclosure of dangerous ingredients in cosmetics products; the Radiation Quality Assurance Act, which improves the safety of radiation-emitting medical and dental equipment; and the Toxic Toys Act, a new law will eliminate from plastic toys chemicals linked to breast cancer called phthalates. Currently, other states are following Californias lead by introducing similar legislation. BCF also serves as the national coordinator for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a market-based campaign pressuring the cosmetics industry to secure the corporate, regulatory and legislative reforms necessary to eliminate dangerous chemicals from cosmetics and personal care products. BCFs work is deeply rooted in science, and over the past five years BCF has amassed an overwhelming body of evidence linking chemicals in the environment to breast cancer. In January 2006 BCF published the 4th edition of its landmark report, State of the Evidence: What is the Connection Between the Environment and Breast Cancer? The report summarizes the findings of more than 350 experimental, epidemiologic and ecological studies, describes some of the ongoing controversies in breast cancer research, and makes a strong case for reducing or eliminating toxicants by acting on this evidence. The 5th edition of State of the Evidence will be release in January 2008.
